Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl: For combining the ingredients for the steak patties.
  • Skillet or Frying Pan: A large, heavy-bottomed skillet works best for browning the patties and making the gravy.
  • Spatula: For flipping the patties and stirring the gravy.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons: To accurately measure ingredients like breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, and spices.
  • Knife and Cutting Board: For chopping onions and slicing mushrooms.
  • Whisk: To ensure the gravy is smooth and lump-free.
  • Plate or Tray: For holding the cooked patties while you prepare the gravy.
  • Wooden Spoon: For sautéing the mushrooms and onions.

Ingredients

  • For the Steak Patties:
  • Ingredient Quantity
  • Ground beef 1 lb
  • Breadcrumbs 1/2 cup
  • Egg 1 large
  • Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp
  • Garlic powder 1/2 tsp
  • Onion powder 1/2 tsp
  • Salt 1/2 tsp
  • Black pepper 1/4 tsp
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • Ingredient Quantity
  • Sliced mushrooms 1 cup
  • Butter 2 tbsp
  • All-purpose flour 2 tbsp
  • Beef broth 2 cups
  • Onion finely chopped 1/2 cup
  • Salt 1/4 tsp
  • Black pepper 1/4 tsp

Instructions

  • Prepare the Steak Patties:
  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until combined.
  • Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  • Cook the Patties:
  • Heat 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside.
  • Make the Mushroom Gravy:
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining butter. Sauté onions and mushrooms until tender.
  • Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir to create a roux. Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly. Simmer until the gravy thickens.
  • Combine and Serve:
  • Return the patties to the skillet, coating them in the gravy. Simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes or your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • Freezing: Freeze cooked patties and gravy for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
  • Substitutions: Use ground turkey for a lighter version or gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a gluten-free option.
